Chaser Q&A

How did you realize your love for weather?

This may seem weird…but I realized my love for it after I was hit in the face with a baseball size hailstone while riding in my brother’s droptop mustang. Being a teenager we had no idea of the danger in front of us.

My nose was broke, and I was knocked unconscious for a short period! After that…it was all over! I had to learn how to storm chase!

When did you decide you wanted to storm chase?

When I was in my 20’s.

How long have you been actively chasing (in years)?

8

Do you chase for a reason?

I chase to enjoy mother nature….and if I happen to make a couple of bucks along the way…even better!

Do you prefer to chase alone or with a group?

ALONE!!

Have you ever considered going on a storm chase tour?

No

How do you feel about the current state of storm chasing?

I try not to get into that aspect of it. But I feel it’s vital to have ground truth backing up radar imagery.

Which era of chasing would you prefer to exist? Old-school or new-school?

New School

How far are you willing to travel for a good set up (in miles)?

300

What are your favorite areas to chase? Least favorite?

Favorite: NW Oklahoma; Least Favorite: E. Oklahoma

What is you favorite type of set up to chase? Least favorite?

I much prefer to chase isolated, slow moving structured mesocyclones, simply for the photography aspect. Ones that lets you shoot a lengthy timelapse.

What is your most memorable chase? Least memorable?

Most memorable: The Moore, Oklahoma tornado on 5-20-13

Least Memorable: Every blue sky bust I’ve ever been on! 🙂

Have you ever feared for your life?

Yes, a couple of times!

Are you afraid to make dangerous maneuvers while chasing? (I.E – core punching/hook slicing/living in the bears cage)

No I’m not…but I do everything to NOT add to the danger levels…especially all the aforementioned.

Do you have any superstitions?

Nope

Would you sacrifice a salaried job with full benefits, but only 2 weeks out of the year to chase for a paycheck to paycheck life with unlimited chasing?

Yes

Are you currently doing anything job related to the weather?

No

Have you ever been to ChaserCon?

No

Are you more likely to hang out with other chasers while waiting for initiation, or sit alone on a country road watching the sky?

Sitting alone. Don’t like others following me, and I also don’t like being suckered into following others. So I much prefer to hangout on a desolate dirt road!

What is your favorite storm chase and why?

The chases that I get to take my father with me are my favorite! End of story!

How did you learn what you know about forecasting and meteorology?

From my best friend and mentor, an On air Met. who has more than 10yrs chasing for local news stations, in the OKC market.

How you do you feel about the media in regards to the weather and chasing?

Again, another aspect I care nothing to get into.

Who are the most influential people to you out in the field?

Jonathan Conder, David Payne, Chris Sanner, and Mike Hollingshead.

What do you fear most about a storm?

Lightning.

Do you have a job that supports storm chasing?

I WISH! 🙂

Do you have a family that supports storm chasing?

50/50 they support it…they don’t like me doing it. For obvious reasons.

How long do you plan on chasing?

Is “Till I’m old and feeble, and can’t drive a car” an answer??
