May 18, 2017: Chester and Seiling, Oklahoma tornadoes

Storm Chasing Event Archive > 2017 Events > May 18, 2017

EVENT SYNOPSIS: Chasers had high expectations for this day, as abundant moisture spread north east of a dryline and underneath southwesterly flow aloft thanks to an upper trough in the western US. The SPC issued a High Risk with a 30% hatched area for strong tornadoes from Kansas through central Oklahoma, and PDS tornado watches were issued. The day, however, turned out to be difficult one, as only one storm produced highly visible tornadoes near Chester, Seiling and Waynoka. After the storms congealed into a line, they produced a string of QLCS tornadoes in eastern Oklahoma into Missouri after dark, as well as spectacular upward lightning at the Oklahoma City tower farm.
