I went out for a couple hours during the height of our winter storm here this morning, and witnessed thundersnow at 6:00AM near Sunset Hills:
Based on people reporting this in Kirkwood, Sunset Hills and Affton, it appears this was a self-initiated upward flash from the Fox 2 TV tower in Sappington. Research shows that a lot of thundersnow in the Midwest is self-initiated upward flashes from tall objects like towers, wind turbines and skyscrapers.
Most of the city ended up over the 6" mark. 8" in Edwardsville, 4" at my place in New Baden.
