A huge tongue of dry air, now punching off the African coast, puts a stop to any substantial development occurring near the cape Verde islands. Note the end of the TWP loop off the Africa coast.

I guess now that any chance for a USA land falling storm intercept now will be tropical formation in the Eastern Caribbean

However ....You usually do not have Caribbean development in October of el nino years.

I am now looking towards Asia...

All I know...is at least I got one intercept of sorts...with Hurricane Bill with the Hurricane Hunters. Not quite the same fun as being on the ground. I'm already looking at Winter. Even at this point I doubt I'd chase anything tropical if it turned up. But we'll see what October brings..despite the obvious implications your observation Stuart.

Hurricanes aren't going away, may just have to wait another year!!!

Even in a good year, Cape Verde cyclones tend to be a waste of time. When they pay off, they pay off big-- but I can count such occasions since the 1980s on one hand.

As for my plans... I'm not holding out much hope for the Atlantic, but I am very hopeful Re: the E Pacific. It's been a good year on that side, and the main month for severe landfalls there is October. And since I'm a Southern Californian, the W coast of Mexico is my backyard-- easily accessible via cheap, direct flights.

Good day all,

Most of the time, especially with such years as this one, with shear and trough "hurdles" in their path, Cape Verde systems are a tease. You see them coming, and everyone gets excited (media hypes it up), then it turns away at the last minute and only "freighter ships and sword fish" see it.

This year, I am grateful the Cape Verde season is over.

The SW Caribbean holds some possibility in October as well, as long as there is a break in the shear. But this year is much like 2006 and 2007, where NOTHING formed there (or in the Gulf of Mexico) during that period.

Hummmm ... Something to consider myself ;-)

This is sad... I had such high hopes for this season and although I have not ruled out the chances of a GOM storm in October.

I'm stunned that our chase of hurricane Bill in Novas Scotia might end up geing the only Atlantic hurricane chase (on the ground) of the entire season by anyone! Some onecorrect me if I'm wrong, and it was mediocre at best.

I was unable to go to Jimena in the Pacific since I already had obligations to film at the Crystal Cave.

Sad, truly sad.

I hope something spins up, I've got an Angry Planet episode to film and the scraps we got in Bill are not going to fill a whole show.

We might need to put together a hurricane chaser's support group where we can all take turns standing in a wind tunnel, throwing buckets of water and roof shingles at each other.

i second this motion.

maybe the title of the thread should be RIP Atlantic season.
Yep. But 2009 only sucks if you're totally Atlantic-basin-centric. Everything else is cool. You'll get some action in the W Pac, I (or we) will get some action down in the E Pac, and we'll all be happy.
