where does a guy find the record highs for specific days and locations?

Record Highs....

A number of places:
-Each NWS WFO web page has a link to local climate records (look about half way down the blue bar on the left side of the page).
-Regional climate centers (there are a few that cover the nation. Check here for names: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/regionalclimatecenters.html)
-NCDC, particularly, the climate extremes page (http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/severeweather/extremes.html)
-If you're looking for records for Iowa, records can be found for many sites (http://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/climate/)
I'm sure there are also other sites that others may fill in for you.
